What is RSS?
Why should finding and using information on the internet
be so hard? After all, it can be a daunting task trying to stay
on top of information.
Imagine if you could have news and up-to-date stories and features
delivered directly to your computer!
RSS is a way for you to have a direct pieline to websites and their
new content all over the internet. It is a simple way for you to
get the latest headlines and stories in one place, as soon as they
are published, without having to visit each site every day.
RSS, which is short for "Really Simple Syndication,"
is is an XML-based technology method for receiving constant updates
from websites and blogs without the laborious process of visiting
individual sites, wading through outdated content and managing annoying
pop-up ads.
Basically, it is a very simple way to receive headlines, summaries
and links to full stories from various sources, such as CIBER, CNN,
BBC and others.
How Do I Access RSS News Feeds?
It’s quick and easy!
To use RSS, you will need an RSS news reader or aggregator.
RSS news readers allow you to view the service you select in one
place and, by automatically retrieving updates, stay current with
new content soon after it is published.
There are a number of different news readers, many
of which are available for free. Most news readers are free-standing
applications that you download and install, while others are Web-based
services that work with your browser.
Here is a list of a few readers you can download:
http://www.pluck.com
http://www.rssreader.com
http://www.feedreader.com
http://reader.rocketinfo.com
You can add the RSS feed to your reader by copying
and pasting the RSS URL into a new feed in your news reader.
Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically
check for RSS feeds for you when you visit a website, and display
an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to RSS feeds
much easier. For more details on these, please check their websites.
Yahoo! users can add RSS feeds to your My Yahoo! page.
- Click on the "Add to My Yahoo!" button.
- Follow the instructions for adding the feed to your My Yahoo!
page.
Another way many people use RSS feeds is by incorporating
content into weblogs, or "blogs". Blogs are web pages comprised
of usually short, frequently updated items and web links. Blogging
as a publishing tool is used for many purposes: traditional journalism,
personal journals, group discussions around a topic, and many combinations
in-between.
